Biography 

Andrew L. Metter, FAIA, LEED AP, is Director of Design at Epstein | Metter Studio. He received a Master of Architecture from Washington University in 1976. After serving as a principal in the firm of Lubotsky, Metter, Worthington & Law from 1984-1986, he became a Senior Designer at Perkins & Will, Chicago, from 1986-1989. In 1990, Metter joined the firm of Epstein; he was appointed Vice President of Architectural Design in 1994, then was named Director of Design in August of 2006.

Metter's work has received design awards from Progressive Architecture magazine and the Architectural League of New York, as well as numerous Distinguished Building Awards from the Chicago Chapter of the AIA. His recently completed design of the Serta International Center received a Chicago Architecture Foundation 2008 Patron of the Year Award, a 2009 Chicago Chapter AIA Distinguished Building Award, and a 2010 National AIA Honor Award. The 90,000-square-foot world headquarters for Serta, located in Hoffman Estates, IL, has been featured in numerous publications, including the September and November 2009 issues of Architect Magazine.

In 1985, Metter received the AIA Young Architect Award. He was also awarded AIA Chicago Chapter Honor Awards in 1987 for the Design of the Ravinia Gift Shop and in 1993 for his work at Midway Airport. His Wilmette Public Works Facility received a 2000 Chicago Chapter AIA Distinguished Building Honor Award. In 2003, the Chicago Chapter of the AIA awarded Metter's design of the Renishaw, Inc. North American Headquarters with a Distinguished Building Honor Award. Also in 2003, Metter's renovation of the Gladstone Factory received an AIA Chicago Chapter Honor Award.

His work has been published in numerous magazines and periodicals including Progressive Architecture, AIA Journal, Baumeister, Inland Architect, Chicago Architecture Annual, New Art Examiner, and Architecture Magazine. His work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago), Institute d'Architecture Francais (Paris), and the Gulbenkian Museum (Lisbon, Portugal). His drawings are part of the permanent collection of the Chicago Historical Society.

In Spring 1997, Metter was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, and is currently Chair of the AIA Gold Medal Committee of the National AIA Committee On Design. In addition, he is currently an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, as well as serving as Co-Chair of the Board of Overseers of the IIT College of Architecture.
