Session 3
SCREENPRINTING: A MODEST PROPOSAL
June 21–27, 2010
Faculty: Randy Bolton, Cranbrook Academy of Art
1 credit

As contemporary printmaking and print media embrace monumental scale, increased technical complexity, and elevated status as a primary art commodity, it serves us well to remember Print's historical tradition as a "Modest Proposal" — a humble and meager means of commerce and communication, intended to deliver information, ideas, and opinions to a wide public audience.
For the title of his screenprinting workshop, Randy Bolton borrows from Jonathan Swift's 1729 satirical essay/pamphlet A Modest Proposal (For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public). Bolton will introduce photo-screenprinting processes in combination with digital, 4-color separation techniques for producing artworks of humble origins and modest means, emphasizing outrageous, ironic, or humorous content as a medium for social commentary and public awareness.
Familiarity with the screenprinting process, perhaps the most modest and ubiquitous of today's print media, will be an asset, but not essential. However, a good sense of humor, wit, and irony is a must!
